According to Reuters News Agency on July 5 (local time), the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) under the United Nations ranked Singapore first in its Global Cybersecurity Index (GCI) report. Singapore was followed by Malaysia, Oman, Estonia, Mauritius, Australia, Georgia and France (both 8th), Canada, Russia, Japan and Norway (both 11th), and Britain.

South Korea placed 13th, India 25th and China 34th. The 52nd spot was given to North Korea which is suspected to be one of the culprits behind ransomware hacking cases worldwide. This means that North Korea ranked higher compared to its economic power.

The ITU launched the GCI survey in 2014 to strengthen national cyber security and narrow cyber security gaps in developed and emerging countries. In its first report in 2015, South Korea sat fifth with Germany, India, Japan and the UK.

This year's rankings were determined based on based on countries’ accumulated IT technology, laws and regulations, and data of their information and communications organizations. "The countries except for Singapore, which is ranked number one, have porous cybersecurity systems," the ITU said. "The wealthier a country is, the more cybercrimes are taking place, but countermeasures against them are not prepared yet."
