Kumho Tire announced on June 29 that it has received a finalist prize in this year's International Design Excellence Awards (IDEA) in the automotive and transportation category.

IDEA is an annual award program presented by the Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA) where designers and companies submit entries to the competition. IDEA judging is based on the five criteria for design excellence – design innovation, user experience, benefit to the client, benefit to society and appropriate aesthetics. It is one of world’s top three design awards along with the German Red Dot and iF Design Awards.

Kumho Tire’s futuristic concept tire “Birth On Nature (BON)” has been honored. As the product name suggests, BON is an airless tire inspired by the bone structure of nature. Using the voronoi structure, which means atypical patterns of nature such as honeycomb and shape of leaf cells, it has secured the structural stability and economic efficiency.

Jeong Taek-Gyun, senior managing director of Kumho's R&D headquarters, said, “Kumho Tire's futuristic design and technology have been recognized at the IDEA.”

Meanwhile, Kumho Tire has won the world’s top three design awards – Germany’s Red Dot and iF Design Awards and the U.S.’ IDEA – for two years in a row for the first time in the domestic tire industry.
