LG Display laid the groundwork for creating a new display market by developing a 77-inch transparent flexible organic light emitting diode (OLED) display for the first time in the world. This display is expected to be commercialized for the products that can be promoted in the 4th industry, including digital signage, transparent infotainment displays applied to autonomous vehicles, smart desks, and augmented reality (AR) aquariums.

LG Display announced that the company held the National Transparent Flexible Display Project Meeting to share the results of its project to develop transparent flexible displays held at the Seoul Olympic Parktel in Seoul on June 22.

The National Transparent Flexible Display Project is aimed at developing a high-resolution (UHD) transparent flexible displays which are 60 inches or larger and an IT convergence infotainment system based on them under the management of the Ministry of Industry, trade and Resources and the Korea Evaluation Institute of Industrial Technology (KEIT). The project participated in by a consortium of the government and the private sector was carried out from August 2012 to June with a total investment of 126 billion won (US$113 million).

LG Display, a leading company in the national project, developed a 77-inch transparent flexible display that implements UHD resolution, transmittance of 40%, and a curvature radius of 80R. This result exceeded originally planned 60 inches and curvature radius of 100. LG Display also succeeded in developing a 55-inch adjustable transmittance display that can select light transmission and shading.

As a result, equipment makers which belong to the downstream industry developed a large-area transparent flexible display device for the first time in the world, securing competitiveness in the development of materials and equipment. LG Display introduced an 18-inch flexible OLED and a transparent display in 2014, an 18-inch rollable display with a curvature radius of 30 mm in 2015 and a display with 40-percent transparency in 2016 in 2014.
