Keeping Top Position
Korea’s “Big Three” shipbuilders maintained their world's top three positions in terms of remaining orders (order backlog).
According to the June issue of the World Shipyard Monitor released by Clarkson Research, a British shipbuilding and marine analysis organization on June 20, the shipyard with the largest order backlog in the world at the end of last month was Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (Geoje, 2,666,000 CGTs and 88 units).
Hyundai Heavy Industries (Ulsan, 333,000 CGTs and 69 units) and Samsung Heavy Industries (Geoje, 320,500 CGTs and 60 units) ranked second and third, respectively.
Compared to the end of April, orders for Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering shrank by 9,000 CGTs, while Hyundai Heavy Industries and Samsung Heavy Industries jumped by 94,000 CGTs and 74,000 CGTs, respectively.
Korea's three shipbuilders were followed by Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding (19.29 million CGTs and 44 units) and Japan's Imabari (18.35 million CGTs and 30 units), both of which made the top five.
However, compared to the end of April, orders decreased such as 26,000 CGTs (Hyundai Heavy Industries) and 208,000 CGTs (Imabari Shipbuilding) while Samsung Heavy Industries recorded an increase of 74,000 CGTs.
