Naver Corp., South Korea's top Internet portal operator, said on June 19 that it will work with global chipmaker Qualcomm Inc. to further develop its Clova, an artificial intelligence (AI) platform co-developed with its chat app subsidiary Line. Under an agreement with Qualcomm's subsidiary, Qualcomm Technologies, Naver will provide Clova for use with the global giant's Internet of Things (IoT) chip processors.

Qualcomm has been already supplying its IoT chips to various companies, such as Samsung Electronics, LG Electronics and Nike, in the global market. More than 1 billion units of IoT devices around the world are equipped with Qualcomm's IoT chips. Naver said numerous companies that use Qualcomm's IoT chips will be able to choose Clova as one of various AI platforms in the future.

An official from Naver said, “We expect that the combination of Qualcomm's system-on-a-chip (SoC) and Naver’s Clova AI platform can become the reference model for AI device development. A company, which seeks to manufacture AI hardware such as smart speakers, can easily use Clova when it uses Qualcomm's IoT chips.”

An official from Qualcomm said, “It means that various IoT devices equipped with Qualcomm's IoT chips can use Naver’s Clova AI platform more easily and conveniently. Qualcomm will optimize IoT chips in order for Naver to easily introduce its Clova platform.”
