The number of KOSDAQ-listed companies with a market cap of at least one trillion won (US$900 million) rose from nine to 24 between 2010 and June 9 this year.
The number of KOSDAQ-listed companies with a market cap of at least one trillion won (US$900 million) rose from nine to 24 between 2010 and June 9 this year.

 

According to the Korea Exchange, the number of KOSDAQ-listed companies with a market cap of at least one trillion won (US$900 million) rose from nine to 24 between 2010 and June 9 this year, and the ratio of such companies in the same stock exchange jumped from 15.2% to 24.8% during the same period.

Back in 2010, the nine companies with a market cap of at least one trillion won were found in multiple different sectors. Since 2014, however, most of such companies have been those in the entertainment, IT, biotech and communications technology sectors as entertainment companies, biotech and pharmaceutical companies, and semiconductor manufacturers showed a significant growth in 2014, 2015, and 2016 and this year, respectively

At present, one-third of the 24 are biotech firms, seven are semiconductor, four are entertainment and three are telecom and broadcasting whereas the eight included two telecom and broadcasting companies seven years ago as its largest portion.

Celltrion has shown the largest market cap in the stock exchange since 2010 with the only exception of 2014. Its market capitalization has increased from 3.9 trillion won (US$3.5 billion) to 12.4 trillion won (US$11 billion) during the period. It is currently followed by Kakao (7.44 trillion won or US$6.7 billion), Medy Tox (3.19 trillion won or US$2.9 billion) and CJ E&M (3.11 trillion won or US$2.6 billion).
