The Korean Intellectual Property Office announced on June 6 that the number of patent applications related to learning-based driving control technology jumped from 15 to 24 between 2015 and last year.

The number remained at around 15 in each of 2011 to 2015. Last year, however, it increased a lot as artificial intelligence (AI) began to draw the interest of many people. Vehicle driving control technology can be defined as a set of technologies with which road conditions can be recognized by means of radar sensors, cameras and the like and vehicle steering, braking and so on can be automatically controlled based on the recognized situations.

The number of this type of patent applications totaled 104 for the 10-year period that ended last year. The applications include 46 related to constant-speed driving and collision prevention, 23 related to lane keeping, 12 for parking assistance and 22 for detecting drivers’ abnormalities.

By applicant, the Hyundai Motor Group took up 34 out of the total, followed by Hyundai Mobis (19), Mando (10), the Electronics & Telecommunications Research Institute (seven), LG Electronics (five), Hyundai Autron (four), Korea University (four) and Samsung Electronics (three).
