Samsung SDI held a ceremony in honor of the completion of an electric vehicle (EV) battery plant with the participation of about 150 people including Viktor Orban, prime minister of Hungary, Jeon Young-hyun, president of Samsung SDI, Peter Szijjarto, Hungarian minister of foreign affairs and trade, and Lim Keun-hyung, Korean ambassador to Hungary in Göd, 30 km north of Budapest, Hungary.

The plant in Hungary, whic was built on land of about 330,000㎡, will mass-produce EV batteries beginning in the second quarter of next year with production lines that can churn out about 50,000 units of batteries for electric vehicles. In particular, the plant plans to produce high-output, high-efficiency batteries using the latest technologies of Samsung SDI by retrofitting the place where PDPs were rolled out in the past. With the completion of the plant in Hungary, Samsung SDI built a global triangle system for EV batteries with its plants in Ulsan and Xian.

Europe is leading the global electric car market on the strength of its eco-friendly policies. As a result, the market of EV batteries, a key component, is expanding.

"We introduced capitalism and encountered many new companies and brands in the early '90s,” Prime Minister Orban said. “We learned soon that ‘Made in South Korea’ guarantees product quality. Korea became a good model for us. I realized that a small country with diligent people grew into a strong economy and took a strong position in the global market. Samsung learned from others, but always pursued its own way. Göd wanted Samsung the most, and Samsung wanted to come back here. Therefore, the Hungarian government is supporting the project. Thank you, the top management of Samsung for choosing Hungary and Göd."

"Samsung SDI’s advanced technology will be applied to batteries produced at the Hungary plant. We expect that the batteries will make a great contribution to the development of the European electric car market as a key component for global automakers," Samsung SDI president Jeon said.
