GS E&C announced that it signed a contract on building a 400kV Patuadhali-Gopalganj transmission line for about US$179 million with the Power Grid Company of Bangladesh Ltd. (PGCB) on May 24. It was the largest transmission line construction project in Bangladesh's PGCB.

This construction, which will be carried out solely by GS E&C, is a design, procurement, construction (EPC) project which will build a 160-km-long 400kV transmission line from Patuakhali to Gopalganj in the central and southern areas of Bangladesh and a 9-km-long 132kV transmission line from Gopalgani to Faridpur. The company will start construction work in June this year and complete the project in June 2019 after the construction for 24 months.

GS E&C made a foray into Bangladesh by way of a transmission line project in 1983 and since then, has been carrying out projects in the country for more than 30 years. Recently, the global contractor carried out a large-scale transmission line construction project such as the 400kV Bibyana-Kaliakoir Project with the support from the EDCF, Korea's foreign aid cooperation fund.

"The growing demand for electric power in developing countries will steadily give new orders to companies in the overseas transmission line construction market," said Lim Ki-moon, head of electric infrastructure at GS E&C. “We will continue to expand our position in the overseas market based on our rich experience accumulated via various power transmission and voltage change projects at home and abroad."
