Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) announced that it has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Samsung Electronics at the Samsung Electronics headquarters in Seocho-gu, Seoul, on April 27 to jointly develop peak management pilot projects using smart home appliances and business models using the Internet of Things (IoT) in the energy sector and create new markets.

The two companies will develop refrigerators and air conditioners equipped with a power peak management feature using the KS standards for smart home appliances, which have been jointly developed with the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, and carry out a pilot project on 100 households in the capital area for a year starting from July this year to automatically reduce power consumption of smart home appliances at the peak hours of power consumption using wireless communications.

When 50 percent of refrigerators and air conditioners across the country have the power peak management feature, the nation’s power consumption and maximum load are expected to decrease by 8 percent and 1 million kW, respectively.

In addition, KEPCO and Samsung are planning to apply the system to more diverse smart home appliances from the second half of 2018 and establish the big data platform connecting the IoT in the energy sector.
