On April 25, the SPC Group said that the company sold more than 120 million units of natural yeast bread of its own development in total in one year since its launch.
The SPC Group discover natural yeast (SPC-SNU 70-1, patent registration number: 1015518390000) for baking in malted rice by collaborating with the College of Agriculture and Life Science at Seoul National University for 11 years. In April of last year, the group succeeded in commercializing the natural yeast bread for the first time in Korea by launching 29 kinds of products.
Since then, the company has launched 167 kinds of natural yeast products, including 57 kinds via Paris Baguette and 45 kinds via SPC Samlip for one year and reached accumulated sales of 270 billion won (US$243 million) and sales volume of 120 million units.
Natural yeast SPC-SNU 70-1 is characterized by fewer fermentation odors and bland flavor, which betters the tastes of other ingredients and produces a chewy texture when making bread.
The natural yeast was applied to Shake Shack Burger introduced in Korean last July. The SPC Group became able to produce its own buns for the first time in countries which Shake Shack Inc. entered as the US-based company recognizes the good tastes and high quality of buns made based on the natural yeast.
The SPC Group also introduced the yeast bread abroad. Over 190 Paris Baguette stores in China launched 16 kinds of natural yeast bread and baguettes and sold more than one million units. Thanks to the popularity of the natural yeast bread, sales of Paris Croissant and SPC Samlip rose 3% and 7% over the previous year, respectively.
