Korea's exports of information and communications technology (ICT) products increased for the fifth straight month in March.

Exports of ICT products increased to US$16.5 billion last month, up 5.8 percent from a year ago due to the global expanded demand for semiconductors and displays, according to the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy on April 12.

ICT imports increased 8.1 percent to US$8.65 billion in the same month, resulting in a trade surplus of US$7.5 billion in the ICT sector. The increasing demand abroad for Korean semiconductors, displays and computers led the surge in ICT exports, offsetting the slow move of mobile phones, the ministry said

Exports of semiconductors in March jumped 44.1 percent from a year earlier to make a record high of US$7.62 billion.

By country, exports to China increased 15.6 percent to US$8.1 billion and those to the European Union jumped 28 percent to US$910 million.

The country's overall exports have been on a rise since November last year. In particular, Those in February this year saw a 22.8 percent increase year-on-year, marking the highest pace since August 2010.
