SK Holdings C&C announced on April 5 that it has jointly opened “AI cancer medical center” and started providing the medical treatment through Watson with Kunyang University Hospital.

Yoon Dae-sung, professor of the cancer center at Kunyang University Hospital, said, “One of the great advantages of the Watson system is that it constantly learns the latest medical knowledge and upgrade itself. In short, patients now can receive the cancer treatments of international standards proven around the world at home.”

When doctors enter a cancer patient’s information, medical records and test records, the Watson for Oncology picks out the best treatment for the patient based on the data within tens of seconds. Watson will serve as an assistant as it keeps receiving updates of the latest data, such as medical information and documents, which doctors cannot entirely understand. However, Watson will only help doctors make an efficient decision, while doctors will decide on which treatment they will use for the patient and communicate with the patient.

As the Fourth Industrial Revolution, which is considered the big data analysis and AI, is taking aim at the medical sector, it is meaningful in that Kunyang University Hospital has adopted the Watson for Oncology for the first time in the central part of the nation. This is because it will change the trend that cancer patients have flooded into large hospitals in the capital area.

Lee Ki-yeol, head of IT service unit of SK Holdings C&C, said, “The Watson for Oncology is the first step for Kunyang University Hospital to become an Aibril-based AI general hospital. We will provide high-quality medical services based on Aibril at anywhere in Kunyang University Hospital through the customized AI medical help services for patients and doctors in the future.”
