Google’s Android surpassed Microsoft’s Windows in terms of operating system (OS) market share, including personal computers and mobile devices, for the first time. This was largely due to the significant increase in usage of smartphones and tablets compared to desktop computers.

According to Ireland-based web browser market researcher Statcounter on April 3 (local time), Android topped the worldwide OS internet usage market share with 37.93 percent in March, which puts it marginally ahead of Windows with 37.91 percent for the first time.

Android held just around 2 percent of global OS market share only five years ago, while Microsoft’s Windows held an 80 percent market share at that time.

An official from Statcounter said, “It marks the end of Microsoft’s leadership worldwide of the OS market which it has held since the 1980s.” Apple’s iOS ranked third in terms of market share with 13.09 percent.

Kyodo News said that the two companies’ market shares have reversed due to the fact that the penetration rate of smartphones using Android rapidly surged while the personal computer market, a stronghold of Windows, shrank.

Microsoft’s Windows still holds a market share of 84 percent in the personal computer market. Statcounter conducted a survey on desktop computers, laptops and smartphones connecting to the Internet for market shares.
