It has been found that South Korea has the lowest birth rate among OECD member countries and its birth rate is one of the lowest in the entire world as well.

These days, the majority of South Korean families are refraining from having their second baby as child rearing in South Korea is becoming increasingly difficult and raising one child is already burdensome. In the meantime, South Korea’s annual economic growth rate, somewhere between 2% and 3%, ranks 110th or so in the world. It has already dropped out of the top 10 in the group of OECD countries, too.

The Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) of the United States released The World Factbook on March 20. According to it, South Korea’s total fertility rate estimate for last year is 1.25, ranking 220th out of 224 countries. The total fertility rate can be defined as the total number of children who would be born per woman.

As mentioned above, only four countries in the world are lower than South Korea in terms of total fertility rate. Specifically, the figure is 0.82 for Singapore, 0.94 for Macao, 1.12 for Taiwan and 1.19 for Hong Kong.
