Samsung SDI, one of the nation’s top battery makers, unveiled its new models of energy storage system (ESS) at the Energy Storage Europe 2017, which takes place in Dusseldorf, Germany, for three days from March 14 to 16.

The Energy Storage Europe is the leading international trade fair for ESS and new renewable energy. This year, about 100 companies in the ESS sector from 50 countries participated in the exhibition, including major ESS firms ABB, Siemens, and Younicos which have entered the European market.

Samsung SDI’s new ESS products are the E2 model, which has a larger storage capacity, and the high-power P3 model. Both models have much higher energy density than the previous ones. The company said that it increased the number of cells per container in the E2 through its "differentiated" module design.

It also dramatically raised the intensity of space in the ESS container by upgrading the module design and rack arrangement technology. The E2's module size has decreased to 35 meters from its predecessor's 42, and there are now 22 cells instead of 20. In short, more cells can be stored in a smaller room.

With the rack arrangement technology which removes passages between cells in the ESS container, more ESS modules can be stored in the container, while the new cooling technology prevents overheating. It is also easy to manage the ESS with the doors on both sides of the container. As a result, the E2 boasts a capacity of 9.1MWh per container, near double its predecessor.

Samsung SDI also unveiled the high-power P3. The P3 has increased power density by 15 percent without changing the size of battery cells from to 78Ah from the 68Ah of its previous iteration. So, it can maintain the high-power state for longer periods of time.
