The Samsung Group recruits new employees by receiving applications from March 15 and conducting the Global Samsung Aptitude Test (GSAT) on April 16. The number of new employees is predicted to be smaller than that of last year, less than 4,000. With the Future Strategy Office of the Samsung Group disbanded, the recruitment is likely to become the last group-wide new staff recruitment.

Specific screening procedures are to be carried out by each subsidiary with the Future Strategy Office having lost its function as mentioned above. In the past, the group used to hire new employees with some margin and allocated them to subsidiaries. This time, however, each subsidiary is likely to reduce the number to the minimum.

The past practice had to do with social contribution, that is, contribution to addressing the problem of youth unemployment. Until recently, the group as a whole hired about 14,000 persons on an annual average.

Samsung Electronics is, however, likely to employ a large number of applicants although most of its subsidiaries are predicted to minimize their employment for the sake of cost reduction. According to industry insiders, the number is estimated at 2,700, approximately 900 more than in the previous year. Samsung Electronics is currently in need of more semiconductor engineers with its semiconductor plant in Pyeongtaek, Gyeonggi Province scheduled to be put into operation in the first half of this year.
