Samsung SDI supplied the batteries for energy storage system (ESS) to California of the U.S. It is the world’s largest supply deal in the industry, which accounts for 40 percent of the electric ESS market in the U.S.

Samsung SDI announced on Feb. 26 that it worked together with ESS system companies to take part in a power supply chain establishment project in California and completed the supply of 240 MWh ESS batteries. It is enough to power 40,000 homes in the U.S. for four hours and has about 700,000 cells with an output of 94A per hour.

Samsung SDI supplies ESS batteries to ESS system companies, including AES, and power companies install and operate them. In particular, the company finished supplying 240 MWh of batteries, which took up about 70 percent of 350 MWh of the total in the project. Samsung SDI President Cho Nam-sung said, “Samsung SDI was able to complete the world’s largest supply of ESS batteries as the company’s competitiveness in battery technology was recognized. It will greatly help with stable power supply in California.”

According to an outlook on the global ESS market released by market research firm B3, Samsung SDI ranked first in terms of global market share with 18 percent in 2015. Navigant Research forecasted that the global lithium-ion battery market for ESS would show an annual average growth of 60 percent from 2.3 GWh in 2016 to 14.8 GWh in 2020.
