The Electronics & Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) of South Korea selected 11 main research tasks to concentrate its R&D resources on the tasks including the development of artificial intelligence (AI) doctors. A total of 36 billion won is scheduled to be invested in the 11 research tasks until 2022.

The tasks include the development of four types of technology related to the establishment of infrastructure for the realization of hyper-connectivity and the four include core intelligent technology for the infrastructure, information and communications technology for unmanned vehicles and 200 Gbps optical transceivers for metro access networks. The development of the information and communications technology for unmanned vehicles is to support the vehicles with ultra-low latency and loss-free networks while the vehicles do their jobs on their own by avoiding obstacles like a bird in the sky.

The development of AI doctors is to contribute to cardiovascular disease treatment. The ETRI is also going to work on self-driving technology imitating drivers’ driving experience, audiovisual coding and light field media for hyper-realistic media, ultra high quality (UHQ) UHD transmission and sensory input and output panels for skintronics.

In addition, the institute is to develop key network infrastructure technology for unmanned vehicles as technology in which hyper-connectivity and hyper-intelligence are combined with each other and technology for restoring auditory ability and muscular strength in which hyper-intelligence and hyper-reality are combined with each other.
