This year, the government will invest 77 billion won (US$658 million) to develop original technologies to cope with the climate change crisis. The Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning said on February 6 that it mapped out and confirmed an implementation plan for technology development projects to combat climate change.

This year, the ministry will invest 770 billion won, which is 15% more than last year’s, aiming at securing the top 10 technologies in three sectors: carbon reduction, carbonization, and adaptation to climate change. The Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning set its main direction to promote strategic technology development, technology management, business management and promotion, and the expansion of collaboration and support systems, aiming at the early commercialization and commercialization of original technologies to tackle climate change.

In the technology development sector, an investment of 19.2 billion won (US$16.4 million) will be made in seven new projects. The ministry will plan and select new tasks in the sectors of solar cell, fuel cell, bio-energy, secondary batteries, carbonization and adaptation to climate change with a focus on a climate industry growth model and add a new project to commercialize Korea’s technology to address climate change in developing countries. In addition, the Carbon Collection and Storage (CCS) Project, which is entering Phase 3 this year, will cooperate with related ministries to promote integrated verification.

To increase the utilization of R&D outcomes, the government will operate a community of research institutes and a demand company council, and establish and operate a strategic platform based on technical expertise in each sector. The Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning will enhance the objectivity of evaluations by reinforcing the application of on-site demand in the project planning process and introducing an interactive discussion evaluation method as an in-depth evaluation.
