CJ E&M announced on January 11 that it will open its first overseas Korean movie channel “tvN Movies” in Singapore.

“tvN Movies” signed a broadcasting agreement with StarHub, the largest pay-TV service provider in Singapore, and will air a total of 200 Korean movies such as action films, comedies, romance movies and thrillers. The channel will also play about 20 new Korean films each year.

CJ E&M also cut a deal with Star Hub to provide on-demand video (VOD) content via online streaming service to enable local users to enjoy Korean movies anytime and anywhere.

In addition, CJ E&M plans to expand its TVN Movies service into other Southeast Asian countries including Malaysia, the Philippines, Indonesia and Hong Kong this year.

"We will take the lead in the global expansion of Korean culture as a Korean cultural wave leader by establishing local corporations, creating joint contents and collaborating with local partners with the goal of becoming one of the global top ten cultural enterprises in 2020," said Kim Sung-soo, president of CJ E&M

CJ E&M has been providing “tvN Asia” channels to 6.5 million households in nine countries in Southeast Asia since establishing a branch office in Hong Kong in 2015. The company has been expanding its business in the Southeast Asian market. For example, last year, they established joint ventures for the film production and contents business in Thailand, and acquired the Blue Group, a major production company in Vietnam in an effort to expand in the Southeast Asian market.
