SK Hynix, the second largest chipmaker in South Korea, announced the release of the world’s highest density mobile DRAM on January 9.
The company said it stacked four 16 Gb LPDDR4 (low power, double data rate 4X) memory chips to realize the advanced mobile chip. The 16 Gb is made of two 8 Gigabyte channels. 8GB is currently the highest density in the LPDDR4X standard. The new DDR4X mobile DRAM features faster data processing speed and improved power efficiency by 20 percent from the existing LPDDR4.
SK Hynix is planning to mass produce and supply the mobile DRAM to smartphones to come soon. The industry forecast that it will be used in the smartphones that will be released in China in the first half of this year.
The 16 Gb LPDDR4x reduces overall power consumption by lowering the voltage for data input and output to 0.6 voltage from 1.1V of the existing LPDDR4. It also can process 34.1Gb data per second through a total of 64 bits of data pints while keeping the lowered voltage.
The size of the new LPDDR4X package has been reduced by 30 percent compared to the current ones, with less than 1 millimeter thickness.
SK hynix said, “The new chip will maximize user conveniences with the virtues of prolonged battery life-span, high performance, and compactness."
Oh Jong-hoon, head of the SK hynix DRAM Production Development Division, said, “The company will realize users’ optimum experiences in mobile phones by providing the highest performing mobile DRAM, adding, “We plan to expand the usage of the product to various fields including high-end laptops and automotive electronics in addition to mobile devices."
In fact, the mobile DRAM is emerging as a cash cow in the DRAM market by replacing the PC DRAM due to the recent popularization of high performing smartphones.
According to the market researcher IHS Market, the average density of RAM in high-end smartphones would rise to 6.9 gigabytes in 2020 from 3.5 gigabytes this year, growing 25 percent a year on average.
In addition, the demand for 8GB mobile DRAM will be generated starting from this year and will occupy 63 percent, the biggest share in the high-end smartphone market in 2020.
