Hyundai Motor Vice Chairman Chung Eui-sun delivered a keynote address at the company’s first press conference presentation at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2017 held at the Mandalay Bay South Convention Center in Las Vegas on January 4 (local time). He is the first domestic conglomerate owner who delivered an address at the CES.

He said in the keynote speech, “We are at the start of a new era of technology convergence and hyper-connectivity. Hyundai Motor is focusing its efforts on developing future mobility that is environmentally friendly, free from all constraints and hyper connected.” In the presentation, Hyundai Motor suggested its three visions for future mobility – Freedom in Mobility, Clean Mobility and Connected Mobility.

In regard to clean mobility, Hyundai Motor plans to expand its eco-friendly vehicle lineups to 14 or more models by 2020, including five hybrid models, four plug-in hybrids, four electric cars and one fuel cell electric vehicle.

The company’s freedom in mobility vision aims to free the driver from all constraints and limitations under the safest possible conditions. Chung said, “We are focusing on the development of autonomous vehicle technologies which can be used in mass production so that much more customers can easily access the latest intelligent safety technologies. He also stressed that the company is seeking to cooperate with global IT firms in its bid to jump into a leading company in technology development.

Regarding to connected mobility vision, connected cars will play a role as a hub in hyper-connected society in the future. James Peters, vice president of the Automotive and Connected Car Business Unit at Cisco, a strategic partner of Hyundai Motor, also attended the conference. He introduced the connected car service platform strategy to be designed through the partnership between Hyundai Motor and Cisco, such as complete self-driving, smart traffic, intelligent remote service and mobility hub.

With a total floor space of 510 square meters, Hyundai Motor plans to showcase one IONIQ electric vehicle (EV) sedan with an autonomous driving feature, three autonomous driving virtual reality (VR) simulators, one healthcare cockpit, one Tucson connected vehicle, smart house concept model, five wearable robots, two IONIQ Scooters and one IONIQ hybrid car at its booth during the CES 2017 held from January 5 to 8.
