Qualcomm finally took the wraps off its Snapdragon 835 application processor (AP) to be used in Samsung Electronics’ next strategic smartphone Galaxy S8. The company reduced the weight of the processor and lowered its heat generation rates in order to increase the utilization of virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) devices.

Qualcomm announced on January 4 that its subsidiary, Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. (QTI), will unveil its latest Snapdragon 835 processor for premium mobile platforms at the CES 2017 to be held in Las Vegas. The company also said devices equipped with the Snapdragon 835 would hit the market starting from the first half of this year.

Qualcomm said the new product will be installed on premium consumer devices that can run various operating systems (OS), such as smartphones, VR and AR head-mounted displays, IP cameras, tablet and mobile PCs, Android and Window 10.

The Snapdragon 835 processor will be mass produced through Samsung Electronics’ 10nm FinFET process for the first time in the world.

The new processor is 35 percent smaller in package size and consumes 25 percent less power compared to its predecessor. With a smaller size, upcoming smartphones to be powered by the Snapdragon 835 can have thinner designs and larger battery packs. In addition, the Qualcomm Haven security platform, which have better biometrics and device authentication technologies, is added.
