Despite its decision to discontinue production of the Galaxy Note 7 smartphones permanently, Samsung Electronics Co. ranked top in terms of smartphone market share in five regions in the third quarter this year, except for the North American market.

According to the data from Counterpoint Research on December 29, Samsung Electronics recorded the highest market share in Asia, Latin America (LATAM), Europe and Middle East-Africa (MEA) in the third quarter, excluding North America.

By region, the company had a 12.1 percent market share in Asia, sharing the first place with China’s Oppo with 12.1 percent. The two companies were trailed by Vivo with 10.4 percent, Huawei with 9.8 percent and Apple with 8.7 percent. Regardless of the Galaxy Note 7 fiasco, Samsung Electronics showed high sales of its budget and mid-range smartphones under its J series branding as well as premium Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge smartphones released in the second half of the year.

Counterpoint Research said, “Samsung has retained the number one spot in Europe, LATAM and Middle East with a big gap with a runner-up. On the other hand, it is expected to continuously contend for the lead with Apple in North America and Chinese smartphone makers, like Oppo, in Asia.”
