POSCO America, a wholly owned subsidiary of POSCO which manages its 24 offices in the U.S., has been relocated in Atlanta, Georgia. Georgia is a state in the southeastern United States in where global automakers’ production lines are clustered together.

According to steel industry sources on December 22, POSCO Group recently moved POSCO America’s head office from New Jersey to Atlanta, the largest hub city in the southeastern U.S. POSCO America has 40 employees and is served as the headquarters in the U.S. It also helps local offices of the group affiliates with sales and technical assistance.

POSCO America had had offices in the eastern part of the U.S., including New York, since its foundation in 1984, but moved its office to Atlanta in 30 years for the first time.

The company made such decision to focus on promoting high-end steel products by increasing face-to-face contacts with customers, like global auto manufacturers. There are 10 states in the southeastern U.S. in where its new office is located such as Georgia, Alabama and North Carolina. Since logistics and labor costs are relatively low, it also plays a key role in reviving the manufacturing industry in the U.S.

In particular, production plants of global automakers, including Hyundai-Kia Motors, General Motors (GM) and Honda which are major customers of POSCO, are concentrated in the area so it is the best location for the group that seeks to improve sales of high value-added automotive steel sheets. POSCO said 38 percent of the total U.S. annual demand for steel products is created in the region.
