Renault Samsung Motors Co., the local unit of French automaker Renault S.A., announced on December 7 that it will work with world-famous artist Jean-Charles de Castelbajac for “SM6 X Castelbajac Art Car Project.”

Jean-Charles de Castelbajac is a French pop artist and fashion designer. He designed rainbow-striped costumes for the Pope and 5,500 priests and bishops as well as outfits for world-famous pop singers Beyonce and Lady Gaga.

Castelbajac plans to introduce sensuous design using paints on the exterior body of the SM6 through the project. He said, “Since the SM6 is combined with European sensibility and Korean beauty, it gives a new feeling every time I see the car. Its sensuous and heart-warming design is impressive. For the Art Car project, I will convey a sense of warmth of living creatures and comfortable haven, though it is a mass of cold metal.” Hwang Eun-young, head of the PR division at Renault Samsung, said, “Get ready for artworks on the SM6 that will be created from the hand of Castelbajac who is an innovator in the art world.”

Renault Samsung will reveal the product of the Art Car Project co-developed by the SM6 and Castelbajac at Gallery Hyundai Dugahun in Samcheong-dong, Seoul, at 2 pm on December 14. The company’s SM6 created a sensation in the domestic mid-size sedan market this year. It sold a total of 50,904 units from the first release in March to last month, achieving its sales target of 50,000 early. In addition, the SM6 took the top spot in the mid-size sedan market, beating the Hyundai Sonata had previously been the most popular mid-size sedan. Recently, it was also selected as the safest car of the year by Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport.
