Dongbu Daewoo Electronics is set to diversify home appliance products targeting the emerging markets in Southeast Asia.
Korea’s 3rd largest home appliance manufacturer said on October 10 that it started producing refrigerators this month in a plant in Malaysia where the company has produced washing machines.
The company said that the production of refrigerators is in line with its strategy responding to the rising demand for home appliances in Southeast Asia.
In particular, the market for two-door refrigerators in the region has shown two-digit growth since last year. Furthermore, the growth rate in countries with a per-capita income of US$3,000 or higher exceeds 20 percent on an annual base.
The Malaysian plant is known to assemble knock-down kits of refrigerators shipped from Korea, enabling a quick shift to producing both washing machines and refrigerators without any particular additional investment in the existing production facility. The company will sell refrigerators produced in the Malaysian plant in the new emerging markets such as Myanmar, Brunei, Laos, and Cambodia.
