It has been found that patents on artificial intelligence of the US are about 47 times as many as those of Korea. Korea is the fourth largest holder of registered patents in the world but still has not narrowed its gap with the front running US and Japan. Also, the use of artificial intelligence technology is relatively low compared to other advanced countries.

The Korea Economic Research Institute said in a report titled “Patent Competitiveness of Artificial Intelligence Technology and Analysis of Its Technology-Industry Connection” on December 1 that the number of Korea’s patents on artificial intelligence technology (1976 - 2014) ranked fourth in the world with 197 patents but was still far from that of the US  (9,171), and that of Japan (1,965).

“Even though Korea held a lot of patents on artificial intelligence technology, the US, which ranked first, had 47 times more patents than Korea and second-ranked Japan’s patents on artificial intelligence technology were about ten times as many as those of Korea. The gaps were huge,” said Lee Byeong-ki, director of the Office of Future Growth Engines at the Korea Economic Research Institute. In particular, in detailed sectors, Korea held five AI application patents, the US, 1,114, Japan, 386 and Germany, 59.

It was also found that the computer programming and information service industries utilized artificial intelligence technology (ten sectors) most among 61 industries in Korea.

The two industries were followed by the measurement, testing, navigation and control and other precision instrument manufacturing and telecommunication and broadcasting equipment manufacturing industries. However, compared with other advanced countries, the use of application technology was relatively low.
