Music service applications such as Melon and Bugs are emerging as a main service that let users experience the Internet of Things (IoT), artificial intelligence (AI) and virtual reality (VR) among others. It is said that a big change will be made in the music source market as next year, Google Music, a Google music service, will make a foray into the Korean market and Kakao will launch a service that combines “Melon” of Loan Entertainment taken over by Kakao in March with Kakao Talk and Daum App.

According to relevant industries, music apps are meeting the latest technology. First, SK Telecom's AI personal assistant service “Who” provides music services in connection with Melon. If a user orders “Who” to play specific music, “Who” will find the music in Melon and plays it.

In particular, if a user orders “Who” to play music good when it rains or the user is blue, “Who” will play music proper for such situations. A new AI service is connected to the music application, making the music service easier to use.

KT is also planning to launch a similar AI service to which KT Music’s “Genie” will be applied.  “Genie” offers VR contents, too. Users can watch VR videos of performances of popular singers. In this manner, KT is utilizing “Genie” as a platform that unveils the latest contents.

Bugs is also expanding IoT-linked services as well. LG Electronics’s “G Watch” and Samsung Electronics’s “Gear Live” among wearable devices offer convenient music service. “Family Hub” of Samsung Electronics refrigerators was loaded with Bugs App.  Users can listen to popular and latest songs and more by touching “Bugs” on the main touch screen of “Family Hub.”

New services are being launched in concert with telecommunication service carriers. SK Telecom formed a strategic tie-up while collaborating with Melon. SK Telecom does not charge for data when SK Telecom subscribers use Bugs. The company offers a 50% discount on the streaming service or the service free or charge. LG U+ is increasing strategic tie-ups with LG U+. It is said that LG U+ which launched “M Tune,” a customized music recommendation service, is considering making equity investment in Mnet.

“Apple Music is already providing its service in Korea and Google Music is in contact with Korean music distributors to start its service soon,” said a representative of the music industry. “Next year will see full blown competition between Korean and foreign music service firms with various services such as high-quality music and big data-based music selection services.”
