Big Data Businesses

Big Data theoretically goes on forever.
Big Data theoretically goes on forever.

As major companies will pick up their big data businesses postponed earlier this year, there are concerns that these businesses will become a party for foreign big data solution companies.

According to the industry on October 7, Hyundai Motor Group and POSCO will start their big data businesses which they temporarily postponed earlier this year.

Hyundai proceeded with its big data proof of concept (PoC) last June then abruptly stopped the project. Then recently, it has picked up on smaller size data businesses for cars. Regarding this, a Hyundai associate said, “We are in the process of internally discussing the big data business application.”

POSCO formed a big data task force (TF) in July for pursuing the business, then postponed as the team leader changed. Then, since last month, it began building foundations for the big data business which recently finished. Now it is waiting on giving out orders.

These two companies will start delivering RFPs to other companies as early as this month. However, the major difference from earlier this year is that these RFPs will be handed out to foreign companies, rather than domestic companies. Hyundai will try to work with SAS, Teradata, and IBM. POSCO is discussing EMC, IBM, Oracle, and SAS.

Also, LG Electronics formed a big data team recently, getting ready for business worth around 1 billion won. In fact, LG Electronics was preparing in small sizes, until Executive Director Choi Sung-ho from Smart Business Center showed great interest in the recent big data application businesses. Choi was scouted from NHN by LG Electronics in order to enforce its SW fields.
