Doosan GridTech, a US-based energy storage systems (ESS) unit of Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction Co., announced on October 17 that it has won a US$3 million (3.39 billion won) order to supply energy storage systems (ESS) to a substation in Austin owned by U.S. public electric utility Austin Energy in Texas.

This is the first major order for Doosan GridTech, formerly 1Energy Systems, since the parent Doosan Group took over the US-based ESS solutions provider through Doosan Heavy Industries in July this year in a bid to secure the original ESS technology.

Under the agreements, Doosan GridTech will supply 3 megawatt-hour (MWh) of solar power ESS to the Kingsbery substation in Austin. The company will also sign another US$3 million (3.39 billion won) contract next month to supply the 3 MWh of ESS to the Mueller substation in the same region.

Meanwhile, Doosan Heavy Industries was selected last September as the main business partner for the state-led project to implement smart grids, pushing into the ESS and small power grid markets for the first time. The company also secured a contract to supply 2.4 MWh of ESS to the Korea Power Exchange headquarters.
