As Samsung Electronics suffered a major setback in the strategic phone market due to the Galaxy Note 7 incident, Samsung Display is expected to move up the date of starting to roll out foldable displays, a core part of next-generation flexible smartphones.

According to the smartphone industry on October 16, it was said that Samsung Display had been accelerating the development of a foldable AMOLED display since the halt of sales and production of the Galaxy Note 7 which was Samsung Electronics’ strategic phone for the second half of this year.

In fact, Samsung Display has entered the final phase of the development of a foldable display such as registering a patent on a method to produce a foldable display at the US Patent and Trademark Office on September 27. This patent is on a method to produce a display made up of a thin metal film, an insulating layer on the film, an organic luminous body on a board and a thin film that surrounds the organic luminous body. This technology enables one to fold a display in a direction that reveals a metallic thin film to the outside.

Earlier, Samsung Display took the wrap off prototypes of 5.5-inch and 10-inch foldable displays at the Samsung Investors Forum held in New York City of the US in November 2014.

Recently, LG began to develop foldable displays. It is known in the display industry that LG Display assembled a TF team on the development of a foldable display late last year and transferred the project from the R&D center to the development unit and entered the full-scale mass-production phase.

LG Display formed a technological tie with IGNIS Innovation in Canada excellent at OLED circuit technology in order to roll out foldable displays. “But we will make a decision about the development of a foldable display after thoroughly checking future market situations,” said a representative of LG Display, drawing a line.
