Strengthening Asia-US Route

Hyundai Merchant Marine Co. (HMM) decided on October 5 that it will turn its new Asia-US route, begun on September 9 as an alternative for Hanjin Shipping's services in order to minimize losses of shippers, into a regular weekly service.

Until now, the company had been considering the possibility of turning its substitute route into a regular service in a bid to provide various shipping services to customers.

As a result, HMM made such decision as the company can fully operate the route with its own sales force and hopes to increase its market share by strengthening its competitive ability on Asia-US routes.

The company will utilize five container ships of capacities between 4,000 to 6,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU) in a Shanghai-to-LA shipping route via South Korean ports, including Gwangyang and Busan, once a week, starting October 14.

In addition, the company will transport empty containers piled up at the Hanjin Shipping terminal at the Port of Long Beach after the Hanjin Shipping crisis, helping with the terminal operation and logistics flow at home and abroad.

HMM has been providing a stable transportation network by putting in replacement vessels in a timely manner, and helping with the transportation of pileups in Busan port and Hanjin Shipping’s transshipment cargo in the port of Singapore and Busan, as part of its efforts to minimize customers’ damages and stabilize the logistics industry.
