Korea Midland Power Co. announced that it held a celebration for the Boryeong Thermal Power Plant Unit 3 recoding the world's long-term trouble-free operation of 6,000 days at the Boryeong Thermal Power Plant on September 28. The Boryeong Thermal Power Plant Unit 3 recorded 5,000 days of trouble-free operations in December 2014 and this feat was certified by U.S. World Record Academy (WRA), one of the three largest organizations which verify and recognize new world records in the world. This time, it broke its own record of 6,000 days of trouble-free operations at 3:57 am on the 27th.

The Boryeong Thermal Power Plant Unit 3 is often cited as a successful example of Korean-style 500,000kw level coal-fired power generators designed and constructed by domestic technologies. There are a total of 20 units in operation which were constructed with the same technology of the Boryeong Thermal Power Plant Unit 3, such as the Dangjin Thermal Power Plant and the Taean Thermal Power Plant. This technology was also exported to the Cirebon Power Plant in Indonesia run by KOMIPO.

KOMIPO said that it was able to record 6,000 days of trouble-free operations due to a high level of technological competence of its operators through regular training programs and experiences of facility improvements. The company also said that Boryeong Thermal Power Plant Unit 6 and 7 recorded 1,500 days of trouble-free operations, the Boryeong Combined GT Unit 6 1,400 days and Seocheon Thermal Power Plant and Jeju Thermal Power Plant 1,000 days.

Meanwhile, the Boryeong Thermal Power Plant will start retrofitting from 2018 in order to improve the efficiency as part of the government’s plan to reduce und dust. KOMIPO plans to invest 470 billion won (US$427.86 million) in the improvement of environmental facilities in a bid to reduce air pollutants, including fine dust, by 86 percent from the level of 2015.
