It has been found that Doosan Heavy Industries Vietnam Co. Ltd (Doosan Vina) recently signed a contract to produce storage tanks for reactors at a nuclear power plant in South Korea.

VietNamNet, one of the major online newspapers in Vietnam, said on Aug. 7 that Doosan Vina will produce four storage tanks for reactors No.5 and No. 6, which have a capacity of 1,400 MW each, at Shin Kori nuclear power plant in South Korea. Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction is one of the four contractors to produce the plant’s reactors No. 5 and No. 6.

Yeon In-jung, general manager of Doosan Vina, said that the storage tankers for reactors will be the first nuclear power equipment to be made in Vietnam, and many Vietnamese engineers will take part in the production.

To get a permission to produce the equipment, the company had to satisfy strict requirements of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) that gives certification for production of nuclear power equipment, the head of Doosan affiliate in Vietnam.

Doosan Vina got six certificates from the ASME in 2014, becoming the first enterprise in Southeast Asia to be qualified to make equipment for nuclear power plant.

Located at Dung Quat Economic Zone in the central province of Quang Ngai, Doosan Vina is one of the largest overseas manufacturing facilities that Doosan Group, one of the Korean conglomerates, established through its two affiliates, Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction and Doosan Engineering and Construction.

In the meantime, on Sept. 27, South Korean lawmakers from opposition parties argued that the permission to construct the reactors No.5 and No. 6 should be cancelled, saying that the construction area is verified to be placed on the active fault which caused recently a strong earthquake in Gyeongju city area close to the nuclear power plant. The construction of reactors No.5 and No.6 were certified from the Nuclear Safety and Security Commission of South Korea in July this year.
