More than 100 million households in the world will have Ultra HD TVs equipped with the High Dynamic Range (HDR) technology in 2020, a U.S.-based industry tracker said. The HDR technology allows screens to deliver vivid displays by maximizing the range of colors and brightness. It innovates the quality by making light areas lighter dark areas darker.

According to a new report from Strategy Analytics and TV industry sources on September 23, a total of 107 million households with over 250 million viewers will watch shows on TVs using the latest HDR technology in 2020. Strategy Analytics also forecasted that the penetration of HDR TVs will reach nearly 25 percent of homes in the North American market in five years.

In particular, Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics are making every effort to maximize the revenue potential of this new technology.

Samsung Electronics, which released SUHD TV models earlier this year that adopted the HDR technology, is bolstering partnerships with major European content providers to make inroads into the emerging market. Italy's Chili and Infinity and Germany's Videoland, which launched ultra-high definition (UHD) service last year, plan to release HDR service in the first half of next year and Samsung’s quantum dot SUHD TVs are collaborative models with them. The Netherlands' Insight and Spain's RTVE are set to adopt UHD and HDR services at the same time in the second half of this year.

LG Electronics became the world’s first TV manufacturer that demonstrated high-quality HDR images by delivering up to 100 or 120 frames per second in real time. At the IFA 2016 stand in Berlin, Germany, earlier this year, LG demonstrated HDR technology combining High Frame Rate (HFR) with HLG content for the first time in the world. LG teamed up with the Europe’s largest satellite network operator ASTRA as well as the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) and the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) at the event.

Kwon Bong-suk, president of LG Home Entertainment (HE) Company, said in a press conference at the IFA 2016, “The yield rate of OLED products is improving and perfect black and perfect color technologies are continuously developing. We will deliver clear light and shades even in the dimness by developing our own hardware platform and advancing HDR technologies.”
