Overseas Network Construction

KT said on October 4 that it has signed a contract with the local government of the Mazovia Province in Poland to build a high-speed broadband network. The joint project, which will be carried out with Daewoo International, is worth 128.2 billion won (US$119.7 million).

For the next two years and six months, KT will build a total of 3,680 kilometers of optical cables and a backbone network to upgrade the speed to 100 megabytes per second from the current few megabytes per second. The province is the largest and most populous of the 16 provinces in Poland. The Polish capital Warsaw (population 1.7 million) and Radom City (226,000) are located in the province.

The Korean telecommunications giant expects to earn additional income of around 70 billion won (US$65.3 million) from the network management, which will continue for the next seven years. The project is the first supported one from the European Regional Development Fund, the first kind of which a Korean business has ever won.
