InterNations recently released the Expat Insider report for 2016 after conducting surveys in February and March this year with 14,272 expatriates having 174 nationalities and residing in 191 countries. The questionnaires covered the expats’ living standards, settlement processes, personal financial conditions, working environments and family life and the organization analyzed 67 countries regarding which answers were provided by at least 50 surveyees.

According to the result of the survey, Taiwan is the most attractive country for expatriates, followed by Malta, Ecuador, Mexico, New Zealand, Costa Rica, Australia, Austria Luxembourg and the Czech Republic. South Korea ranked 27th above Japan (29th), the Netherlands (30th), Switzerland (31st), Britain (33rd) and France (41st) and below Vietnam (11th), Rumania (16th), Thailand (18th), the Philippines (23rd), Uganda (25th) and the United States (26th). Kuwait is on the bottom of the list, following Greece, Nigeria, Brazil, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Mozambique and Qatar. 

South Korea ranked 11th in the living standards category including health and wellness, safety and security, leisure, travel and traffic. More specifically, it ranked fourth and seventh in terms of the quality of medical services and the convenience of traffic and travel, respectively.

The country took the 22nd place in working environments covering work-life balance, safety at work and the like and the 19th place in family life about rearing and education, the quality of education and so on. In the latter category, South Korea ranked fourth in the quality of education subcategory.

When it comes to living expenses, South Korea ranked 35th while the top four went to Ukraine, Thailand, Taiwan and Vietnam. The U.S. took the 36th spot, followed by Canada (37th), Japan (39th) and France (40th).

In the settlement processes category, South Korea ranked 52nd by coming in 55th in hospitality to foreigners, 50th in friendliness, 51st in the ease of making friends and 52nd in language-related problems.
