SK Engineering & Construction said on September 5 that it has joined the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC) as a way to put its corporate social responsibility into practice. Established in 2000, the UNGC is a United Nations initiative to encourage businesses to adopt sustainable and socially responsible policies.

From now on, SK E&C will comply with the compact's ten principles in four major areas including human rights, labor, the environment, and anti-corruption and submit an annual activity report with the international organization in relation to social responsibility implementation plans and performance. With the joining of the Global Compact as a momentum, the company plans to strengthen its commitment to serving communities to which it belongs and reflect the principles in all areas of its business activity including corporate culture and strategy.

Meanwhile, SK E&C published its first CSR report on September 1. It contains the company's efforts and results to improve its ethics management, quality, safety and health, talent fostering, the environment, shared growth and social contribution.

Previously, SK E&C has become the first Korean construction contractor to win the best practice award in the field of sustainability presented by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD last year. The company also awarded the highest grade in the share growth index evaluation run by Korea Commission for Corporate Partnership for the first time in the industry.  SK E&C has been providing living and educational expenses to 650 children and teens from low-income families from 2011.
