‘Merged Reality’

A performer brandishes drum sticks in the air. Then the sounds of a drum spread. A performer wearing special gloves moves his hands in the air, playing the piano and cello without a physical piano and cello. A drone automatically dodges barriers and self-driving cars maintain safe distances with the cars ahead. This is a counterattack by Real Sense, a 3D camera solution developed by Intel.

On August 16 in the local time, Brian Krzanich, the Chief Executive Officer of Intel, introduced the expansion of a real sense ecosystem and “Merged Reality” based on the real sense ecosystem through a two-hour key note speech for the opening of the Intel Developers’ Forum 2016 in San Francisco's Moscone Center.

Real Sense recognizes and processes distances from objects based on the principle that a human being can feel cubic effects through the two eyes by linking two camera modules. CEO Krzanich disclosed the Project Alloy, saying, “Computer experiences are being redefined.”

While current VR devices are at a level where 3D effects are added to contents that can operate in other devices such as VR, PCs and smartphones, Alloy is an all-in-one VR headset with a ultra-small computer and a battery.

Here, Intel added a real sense camera module and completed merged reality. Merged reality is a concept that VR meets AR. Some people call it “mixed reality.” People can enjoy VR by using a platform developed by Intel and by recognizing items in a specific area recognized by Real Sense, use them in virtual reality.
