Samsung Electronics will unveil products based on the 4th generation 64-layer 3D Vertical NAND (V-NAND) flash at the end of the year.

Samsung Electronics unveiled the next generation’s V-NAND solutions at the Flash Memory Summit held in Santa Clara (CA), U.S. on Aug. 10 (local time). At the end of the year, storage devices that can store terabytes will be released.

There are 4 main products Samsung Electronics applied the 64-layer V-NAND technology, including 64-Layer V-NAND products, 34TB SAS SSD for high capacity servers, 1TB BGA NVMe SSD for Ultra-slim PCs, and high end Z-SSDs. Samsung’s strategy is to introduce various products that can be used not only for personal PCs, but also for enterprises’ servers and clouds.

The 4th generation V-NAND can increase its single-die density to 512 GB, which made it possible to produce the high-capacity products into small packages, and the Input-Output (IO) speed is improved up to 800Mbps (transmission speed that can send 1 million bytes per second).  32TB Server SSD, which is embedded with this V-NAND and has two times more capacity than the original products, is going to be released sometime next year. If the system constituted by the existing HDDs (based on 2 rack) is replaced by 32TB SAS SSDs, the physical space of the system can be reduced to about one fortieth.

In addition, the tiny “TB BGA NVMe SSD,” only the size of a penny, will be produced using the Fan Out-Panel Level Package (FO-PLP) technology co-developed with Samsung Electro-mechanics, and be released next year. When the SSD is applied to a PC, a high-resolution full HD movie can be sent in three seconds, and stored in six seconds.
