Samsung Construction & Trading Corporation (Samsung C&T) won a ground improvement project for Chek Lap Kok Hong Kong International Airport on July 28, which was commissioned by Airport Authority Hong Kong.

The total construction cost is estimated at US$340 million (approximately 399 billion won) and Samsung C&T has won the project with a local specialized firm in a consortium. The Korean company’s share in the consortium is 70%, or US$240 million (about 281.7 billion won) and the construction will be carried out for 20 months until March 2018.

As the project is the first-stage construction for the expansion of the airport, Samsung C&T will first strengthen the weak foundation about 7 meters below the seawater before reclaiming the site for the third runway. It is quite significant in that the Korean firm has obtained a project of high difficulty commissioned by the government in a market with stringent construction standards for quality and safety.

Samsung C&T has been gaining a good reputation from the local construction industry for its outstanding performance as shown in carrying out the metro project SCL C1109 in Hong Kong, which was selected by the Hong Kong government as the top overall construction site in categories of quality, environment and safety.

Capitalizing on the winning of the ground improvement project as a foothold, Samsung C&T is planning to aggressively push to grab the Chek Lap Kok airport’s subsequent construction contracts, including the construction of the third runway and expansion of the second terminal, scheduled to be commissioned in order by the Airport Authority Hong Kong.
