SK Telecom said on July 27 that it has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to develop realistic 3D solutions based on technologies of augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) with Israel-based 3D sensor and image processing developer Inuitive.

The combination of the Korean tech firm’s AR/VR platform T-Real with its partner’s 3D sensor enables devices to recognize movements, objects or spaces in three dimensions. By utilizing the technology, the two companies plan to develop solutions that are able to realize virtual contents tridimensionally.

The existing AR games like Pokemon Go or AR services have expressed their contents in two dimensions, but now it has come to be possible to provide customers with entirely different experiences through 360 degree, high-quality 3D contents.

Inuitive is a global venture business with ownership of 3D sensor technology optimized for mobile environments. The traditional sensors need separate external processors to recognize and process images, while the venture’s sensor can independently process and recognize them with a single processor, which leads to less power and space to install. The two companies will push for development of solutions used for small-sized devices like mobiles that are more frequently utilized in real life.

Choi Jin-sung, head of the Network IT Convergence R&D Center at SK Telecom, said “We are expecting an innovation in user experience in the near future, which enables an realistic user experience service and an activation of the AR and VR world. Through the collaboration with global IT firms, we do our utmost to provide high-level services.”
