As eco-friendly and autonomous vehicles are emerging as core technologies in the future car industry, companies in the information technology (IT), electronics and chemical industries, are scrambling to enter the car component market. As part of the trend, Hyundai Mobis is securing the next-generation technology through more aggressive investment in R&D.
According to industry sources on July 21, Hyundai Mobis, the nation’s largest and the world’s sixth largest automobile components maker, plans to lead technology development in various environmentally-friendly core components, including hybrid car, electric car, plug-in hybrid car and hydrogen powered electric car, and establish the mass production diversification system by building up a “simultaneous responsive system for multi models” in the future. The company went through the stage of small production and mass production for eco-friendly car components after year 2000.
To this end, Hyundai Mobis will gradually change its R&D system in eco-friendly cars, which has been cooperated with Hyundai-Kia Motors, into the independent development system in the future. The company, which currently mass produces driving motors, power converters and battery systems, also plans to independently develop and mass produce starter generators, on board chargers and battery management systems.
In addition, Hyundai Mobis is applying its driver assistance systems (DAS) technology in the sector of driverless cars, which are expected to be commercialized around 2020.
DAS constantly monitor the vehicle surroundings with sensors and its electronic control devices control cars after gathering information on the environment, and they have the same basic principle with autonomous driving technology. Hyundai Mobis has developed DAS technologies, such as Smart Cruise Control, Lane Departure Prevention Apparatus, Lane Departure Prevention Control Apparatus, Autonomous Emergency Braking System and Smart Parking Assist System, and it is mass producing their components.
