Korean augmented reality (AR) company Social Network will release an AR game “Pororo Go” to compete with Pokemon Go.

Social Network, a Korean augmented reality (AR) company, announced on July 18 that they will release “Pororo Go,” an AR game based on the intellectual property rights to the characters of the popular animation “Pororo the Little Penguin” in partnership with Iconix, the producer of the animation.

A hot worldwide frenzy of “Pokemon Go,” a mobile AR game developed by Nintendo and Niantic Lab prompted Iconix to develop “Pororo Go,” where Pororo, the most popular Korean character, is a hero in cooperation with Social Network. This game is planning to load AR technology with educational elements unlike Pokemon Go.

“While Pokemon Go is a fun AR game for adults, ‘Pororo Go’ differentiates itself from others with educational AR elements,” said Park Soo-wang, CEO of Social Network.

In the meantime, Social Network established in 2009 said that the company secured one million members via Sketch Pop, an AR coloring educational application based on popular Korean animation characters such as Pororo, Larva, Tayo, Robocar Poli last year. In China, Social Network secured 1.5 million users via Xiyangyang Sketch Pop based on Xiyangyang in China.
