A boom in Galaxy S7 sales catapulted its developer Samsung Electronics to the top of the US smartphone market in terms of market share, beating US-based Apple. Samsung Electronics recaptured the position in one year since the Korean IT giant lost first place to Apple after rising to the top of the US market with the Galaxy S6 in April last year.

According to an analysis of smartphone sales in major countries in the world by Kantar Worldpanel, a market research company on July 14, Samsung Electronics came in first with a market share of 37% in the US smartphone market from March to May. Apple followed Samsung Electronics with 29%.

By model, the Galaxy S7 series outsold the iPhone S6 series by 16% to 14.6%, substantiating its immense popularity. This is because the Galaxy S7 is better received than its predecessor Galaxy S6 in the US and Europe and the iPhone S6 lost its popularity. In the UK, Samsung Electronics and Apple shared the number one position by chalking up 36% and 36%, respectively.

Samsung Electronics also claimed the top of the smartphone market in India which has been emerging as a promising market while recording double-digit growth every year. Samsung Electronics is solidifying its number one position while competing with Micromax of India and Xiaomi of China

On the other hand, Samsung Electronics is recording poor performances in China. From March to May, this year, Samsung Electronics recorded a market share of 9% in the Chinese market. Samsung Electronics whose market share in China peaked at 34% have been losing its market share in China as Chinese companies such as Huawei and Xiaomi has been taking away Samsung Electronics’ market pie since last year.
