Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power Co. (KHNP) announced on July 12 that New Hanwool units 1 and 2 have become the nation’s first nuclear power plants that succeeded in the 100% localization of core components and equipments.

The company said that it has developed the reactor coolant pump (RCP), “the heart” of a nuclear reactor, and the man machine interface system (MMIS), “the brain” of a nuclear reactor, entirely with domestic technology and completed the performance verification, achieving the complete localization of core equipment for Shin Hanwool units 1 and 2.

In commemoration of the success, KHNP held the New Hanwool units 1 and 2 RCP/MMIS localization workshop at Hilton Hotel in Gyeongju on the same day in order to establish the foundation for nuclear power plant technology independence and overseas export.

The government established the Nu-tech 2012 project in 2007 and KHNP, in cooperation with Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction, pushed ahead with the localization of RCP and MMIS.

With the completion of RCP and MMIS localization, the company has had import substitution effect worth 520 billion won (US$452.96 million) as of two nuclear reactors and secured the export competitiveness by building the base to expand its business overseas through the original technology.
