LG Electronics will jointly develop next-generation connected car platforms with Volkswagen.

LG Electronics signed an MOU on the development of a crossover platform for connected cars in Wolfsburg, Germany on July 6 (local time). The ceremony was participated in by Choi Seong-ho, the Cloud Center, Lee Sang-yong, an executive director of the Auto Parts Technology Center from LG and Thomas Form, Volkswagen's head of electronics and Robert Katner, the head of the VIS Research Lab. from Volkswagen.

The crossover platform that Volkswagen began to develop with LG Electronics is a hyper connection service platform for automobiles. The platform enables people to use smart home service and GPS-based services in cars in real time based on open cloud systems. It has three R&D directions.

First of all, they will develop technology that can interoperate between connected cars and smart homes. Drivers are capable of controlling TVs, washing machine, refrigerators, robot cleaners, lights, etc. at home from cars. The technology also allows drivers to check smart home alarms inside cars. Advanced infotainment technology optimized for connected cars will be developed too.

Ten years have passed since LG Electronics and Volkswagen began to build partnership in the auto parts sector. LG has been supplying AV products to Volkswagen since 2007 before the inauguration of the VC Business HQ which integrated auto parts units. In March of last year, LG Electronics took the wrap off the Gea, a self-driving luxury concept car by collaborating with Italdesign Giugiaro which develops car styling for the Volkswagen Group at the Geneva Motor Show.

In July of 2015, Volkswagen selected LG Electronics as a strategic supplier and listed the tech giant on its list of Fast Program partners.

Volkswagen selected 55 companies as strategic partners for the development of next-generation vehicles via the Fast Program.

Both companies attracted attention from related industries by demonstrating interoperating service between connected cars and smart homes at the US Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2016
