The equipment market of AMOLEDs to be used by Apple is predicted to reach US$13 billion (15.14 trillion won) over the five years from this year to 2020.

According to 2016 OLED Manufacturing Equipment Annual Report, published by UBI Research on July 5, the global equipment market of the 6th generation flexible AMOLED will create about US$ 28.411 billion (about 33 trillion won) for five years between 2016 and 2020, 47% of which is for Apple’s use with US$13 billion.

The figure comes from the assumption that Apple applies the flexible AMOLED to some models of iPhone’s new series to be released in 2017 and all new models to be released in 2018. Apple accounts for approximately 15 percent of the total smartphone market with over 200 million units per year. As such, such moves of Apple is expected to have a great impact on the expansion of the flexible AMOLED panel market in the coming years, the research firm said.

A researcher at the UBI Research said, “In order to meet Apple’s flexible AMOLED panel demand, the required panel production capacity is analyzed to be 30,000 units in 2017 and 300,000 in 2021.” In response to this trend, panel companies are increasing their investment into mass production line, and Samsung Display is expected to invest 30,000 units a year for Apple’s use.
